A tragic car accident in the Kawartha Lakes region has claimed the life of a 16-year-old girl and left another young person fighting for their life. Ontario Provincial Police say the crash happened Saturday evening at the intersection of County Road 49 and Burys Green Road, north of Bobcaygeon. The 16-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the sole passenger was airlifted to a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was not injured.
According to the Toronto Star, the collision closed County Road 49 for several hours while investigators examined the scene and gathered evidence. Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash and are asking witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
If you have any information about this incident, please contact the Ontario Provincial Police or your local police division. Even small details can help investigators determine exactly what happened.
Kawartha Lakes Car Accident Safety Notes: Reducing the Risk of Serious Rural Road Accidents
- Approach rural intersections with caution, even when traffic appears light
- Slow down before entering unfamiliar roads or intersections
- Avoid distractions and keep your focus on the road ahead
- Never assume other drivers will stop or yield
- Be extra cautious when driving at dusk, night, or in poor weather
- Make sure headlights, brakes, and tires are properly maintained
- Young and inexperienced drivers should avoid speeding or taking unnecessary risks
Fatal collisions involving teenagers are among the most heartbreaking accidents on Ontario roads. Young drivers often have less experience handling unexpected situations, particularly on rural roads where visibility, speed limits, and road conditions can change quickly.
For families, these crashes bring devastating emotional consequences. Survivors may also face extensive medical treatment, rehabilitation, and long-term recovery challenges. Even when a victim survives, the physical, emotional, and financial impact of a serious collision can last for years.
