Halton Regional Police are asking for the public’s help after two separate hit-and-run accidents in Burlington left pedestrians with serious injuries.
The incidents happened months apart, but both involve drivers who left after striking pedestrians. Investigators are now trying to identify the people responsible.
Man Seriously Injured in Fairview Street Hit-and-Run
The more recent collision happened on October 7, 2026, at approximately 11:25 p.m.
A man was struck by a westbound vehicle on Fairview Street, just east of Brant Street. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
According to police, the vehicle continued westbound at a high rate of speed.
Witnesses described it as a dark-coloured, compact SUV. Both the driver and passenger were believed to be men around 20 years old.
Police are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Constable Evelyn at 905-825-4777, ext. 2305.
Teenager Injured in Appleby Line and Dundas Street Collision
The second investigation involves a collision that occurred on July 10, 2026, at approximately 9:50 a.m.
A teenage boy was crossing the intersection of Appleby Line and Dundas Street when a turning vehicle struck him.
Police say the driver briefly stopped and spoke with the teenager before driving eastbound on Dundas Street.
The boy later attended hospital, where doctors determined that he had suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators are looking for a light-coloured, medium-sized SUV, possibly a Subaru Forester or Outback. The driver was described as a woman between 40 and 50 years old, approximately five feet five inches tall, with light-coloured hair.
Anyone with information can contact Constable Luke Huinink at luke.huinink@haltonpolice.ca.
Both investigations remain open.
Why Leaving the Scene of a Pedestrian Accident Is a Serious Offence
Ontario drivers have legal duties after being involved in a collision.
When someone is injured, a driver must comply with the applicable requirements to stop, provide information and offer assistance. Leaving the scene can lead to serious legal consequences. However, a driver fleeing does not automatically establish who caused the collision. Police must still investigate the events leading up to the impact.
For injured pedestrians, the driver’s disappearance can also make it harder to identify the correct insurance company and pursue compensation. That is why Burlington hit-and-run accident claims often require a more detailed investigation.
Can You Receive Compensation If a Hit-and-Run Driver Is Never Found?
Yes, compensation may still be available.
One of the biggest misconceptions about Ontario hit-and-run accidents is that an injured person cannot make a claim unless police identify the driver. Ontario automobile insurance policies may provide protection for accidents involving unidentified drivers.
Depending on the circumstances, an injured pedestrian may have access to Statutory Accident Benefits and potentially uninsured automobile coverage. The Motor Vehicle Accident Claims Fund may also apply in certain situations when no other insurance is available. The fund is generally a last resort.
A Burlington hit-and-run lawyer can review the available insurance policies and determine which options may apply.
What Injuries Can Result From a Pedestrian Hit-and-Run?
A person walking across a road or intersection has little protection from an approaching vehicle.
Even a collision at a moderate speed can result in serious injuries.
Common injuries include traumatic brain injuries, broken bones, spinal cord injuries, internal injuries and damage to muscles or joints.
Some injuries require emergency surgery. Others may lead to ongoing pain, reduced mobility or months of rehabilitation.
For children and teenagers, a serious injury can also interfere with school, sports and future development.
An experienced pedestrian accident lawyer in Burlington can help assess both immediate injuries and their possible long-term effects.
What Should You Do After Being Injured in a Burlington Hit-and-Run?
The actions taken after a collision can affect both recovery and an insurance claim.
First, seek medical attention. Even if an injury appears minor, symptoms can become more noticeable in the following hours or days.
Report the accident to police as soon as possible. If you can safely do so, record any details about the vehicle, including its colour, make, model, licence plate or direction of travel.
Try to identify witnesses and nearby security cameras. Dashcam footage from passing vehicles may also help.
Keep copies of medical records, treatment plans and receipts. If you miss work, document your lost income.
Finally, notify the appropriate insurance company promptly. Ontario accident claims have reporting requirements and deadlines that should not be ignored.
Who Pays Medical Bills After a Pedestrian Hit-and-Run in Ontario?
This is an important question for people who do not own a vehicle or have their own automobile insurance.
A pedestrian may still qualify for Ontario Accident Benefits after being struck by a motor vehicle.
Which insurer is responsible depends on Ontario’s insurance priority rules and the circumstances of the accident.
Depending on eligibility and coverage, benefits may help with medical treatment, rehabilitation, income replacement and certain care needs.
A Halton Region personal injury lawyer can help identify the correct insurer and explain the benefits available.
Can You Sue an Unidentified Driver After a Hit-and-Run?
A lawsuit may be possible, but claims involving unidentified drivers have special insurance and evidence requirements.
For example, a claim may need to establish that an unidentified motorist caused the collision through negligence.
The injured person may also need to demonstrate that reasonable steps were taken to identify the driver.
An insurer may examine police reports, witness statements, vehicle descriptions and available video.
If the driver is later identified, the legal options may change.
Because these claims can involve strict notice requirements, seeking legal advice early is important.
