A dangerous impaired driving incident in Ajax, Durham Region, has once highlighted the serious risks of reckless and impaired driving on Ontario roads. Durham Regional Police say a 38-year-old man was arrested after allegedly crashing a stolen school bus into a McDonald’s drive-thru barrier late at night.
CBC News reports that police were called to the area near Taunton Road West and Westney Road North after reports of a shortened school bus being driven erratically. Witnesses told officers the bus attempted to enter the drive-thru before crashing into the barrier. Police say the driver showed signs of impairment and was arrested.
Investigators later discovered the school bus had allegedly been stolen from a North York bus yard. Police say the suspect may have also damaged other buses while leaving the property. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the crash, but authorities say the situation could have easily ended much worse.
If you have any information about impaired or dangerous driving in your area, please contact Durham Regional Police or your local police division. Reporting unsafe driving can help prevent serious accidents and save lives.
Toronto Safety Notes: The Dangers of Impaired Driving
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs and always plan a safe ride home before drinking
- Stay alert for erratic or dangerous drivers on the road
- Keep a safe distance from vehicles driving unpredictably
- Report suspected impaired drivers to police immediately by calling 911
- Impaired driving slows reaction time and affects judgment
- Large vehicles like buses and trucks can cause devastating damage in a collision
Impaired driving continues to be one of the leading causes of serious and fatal motor vehicle accidents in Ontario. When drivers are under the influence, even simple decisions become dangerous.
Incidents involving large vehicles are especially concerning because of the size and weight involved. A crash with a bus, truck, or commercial vehicle can lead to catastrophic injuries for innocent drivers, pedestrians, and passengers.
Even when no one is seriously hurt, these incidents create major risks for the public and can leave victims dealing with emotional trauma, property damage, and long-term consequences.
