A 68-year-old woman has died following a serious two-vehicle collision in Scarborough that also sent two men to hospital.
The fatal car accident happened on Sunday, October 11, 2026, shortly before 10 p.m., near Lawrence Avenue East and Scarborough Golf Club Road.
According to Toronto Police, a grey BMW 750i was travelling eastbound on Lawrence Avenue East when it collided with a red Ford Escape. The Ford was travelling westbound and turning left into a driveway.
A 68-year-old woman riding as a passenger in the Ford was rushed to hospital, where she died from her injuries. Both male drivers suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
On October 13, police announced they had arrested two men. A 34-year-old Toronto man faces charges that include dangerous operation causing death and bodily harm. A second man, 25, faces an obstruction charge. These charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
Toronto Police Traffic Services continues to investigate. Anyone with dashcam footage, surveillance video or information about the collision is encouraged to contact police at 416-808-1900.
Why Are Left-Turn Car Accidents So Dangerous?
Left-turn collisions can be among the most serious types of motor vehicle accidents.
When a driver turns across oncoming traffic, there may be little time for either vehicle to react. The impact can occur at the front or side of a vehicle, placing occupants at risk of serious injury.
Common injuries from a Scarborough car accident can include broken bones, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and internal injuries. Passengers can suffer severe injuries even when they have no control over the actions of either driver.
The October 11 collision shows how serious the consequences can be. One passenger lost her life, while two drivers were hospitalized.
Who Is at Fault in a Left-Turn Accident in Ontario?
One of the most common questions after a crash is “Who is responsible when a car making a left turn is hit?”
Ontario drivers making left turns must yield to oncoming traffic when required by law. However, fault is not always determined by the turning movement alone.
Investigators may also consider the speed of the approaching vehicle, traffic signals, visibility and the actions of both drivers.
In some cases, responsibility may be shared.
Although charges have been laid following this Scarborough collision, criminal charges do not automatically determine fault in a civil personal injury claim.
An experienced Scarborough car accident lawyer can review the evidence to determine which parties may be legally responsible.
Can a Passenger Sue After a Car Accident in Ontario?
Yes. An injured passenger may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim when another person’s negligence caused their injuries.
Passengers are generally not responsible for how a vehicle is driven. However, the circumstances of the accident still need to be investigated.
Depending on the evidence, a claim may involve the driver of the vehicle carrying the passenger, another driver or multiple parties.
A passenger may also qualify for Ontario Statutory Accident Benefits, regardless of who caused the collision.
For families dealing with a fatal passenger injury, the legal process may involve both insurance benefits and a potential wrongful death claim.
Can a Family File a Wrongful Death Claim After a Fatal Car Accident?
When a loved one dies in a motor vehicle collision, certain family members may have the right to seek compensation under Ontario law.
The Family Law Act allows eligible relatives to pursue compensation for certain losses when another person’s negligence causes a death.
Depending on the circumstances, these losses may include:
-
Funeral and burial expenses
-
Loss of financial support
-
Loss of household services
-
Loss of care, guidance and companionship
-
Other eligible financial losses
Every Ontario wrongful death claim is different. Compensation depends on the family’s circumstances, the available evidence and the legal responsibility for the accident.
A fatal collision does not automatically establish negligence.
Are Accident Benefits Available After a Fatal Car Accident?
Ontario’s Statutory Accident Benefits system may provide benefits following a fatal motor vehicle accident.
Depending on the circumstances and applicable insurance coverage, eligible family members may qualify for certain death and funeral benefits.
These benefits are separate from a potential lawsuit against an at-fault driver.
Families may also need help determining which insurance company is responsible for handling the claim.
A Toronto personal injury lawyer can review the relevant policies, explain available benefits and help families understand the claims process.
What Evidence Is Important After a Fatal Scarborough Car Accident?
Evidence plays a major role in determining what caused a serious collision.
For a left-turn accident, investigators may examine vehicle damage, traffic patterns, roadway conditions and the position of each vehicle before impact.
Dashcam and surveillance footage can be especially useful. Video may show vehicle movements, traffic signals and events leading up to the crash. Police reports, witness statements and collision reconstruction findings can also provide valuable information. Medical records and financial documents may help establish the losses suffered by injured people and their families.
Because some evidence can disappear quickly, early investigation is important.
How Much Compensation Can You Receive After a Fatal Car Accident in Ontario?
There is no fixed settlement amount for a fatal motor vehicle accident.
The value of a claim depends on several factors, including the circumstances of the death, the relationship between the deceased and the family members bringing the claim, and the financial and personal losses involved.
Families often search questions such as “How much is a wrongful death claim worth in Ontario?”, “Can a passenger’s family sue after a fatal car accident?”, “Who pays compensation after a fatal collision?” and “Can family members receive Accident Benefits after a car accident death?”
A lawyer can explain the types of compensation that may be available and whether the family has grounds to pursue a claim.
When Should You Contact a Scarborough Car Accident Lawyer?
A fatal collision can leave families dealing with funeral arrangements, insurance questions and financial uncertainty.
At the same time, important evidence may need to be preserved.
Getting legal advice early can help families understand their rights, identify potentially responsible parties and determine which insurance benefits may apply.
A Scarborough personal injury lawyer can also investigate the collision independently of the criminal proceedings and explain how Ontario’s personal injury laws apply.
