Peel Regional Police are searching for the driver of a dark-coloured pickup truck after a pedestrian was killed in a Mississauga hit-and-run Tuesday evening.
Emergency crews were called to Winston Churchill Boulevard and Dundas Street West shortly after 6 p.m. on September 29, 2026. Police said the pedestrian was travelling northbound and had entered the west side of the crosswalk. A pickup truck was travelling south on Winston Churchill Boulevard before turning west onto Dundas Street West. The pedestrian was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the driver did not remain at the scene. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses as they work to identify the vehicle and driver. The circumstances leading to the collision remain under investigation.
Anyone who witnessed the fatal Mississauga pedestrian accident or has relevant dashcam or surveillance footage should contact Peel Regional Police.
What Happens After a Fatal Hit-and-Run in Ontario?
A fatal hit-and-run involves two separate issues.
Police investigate the collision and the driver’s failure to remain. At the same time, the victim’s family may have questions about insurance and their legal rights.
The fact that a driver has not yet been identified does not necessarily mean a family has no options. Ontario’s insurance system contains provisions that can become relevant when an at-fault driver cannot be identified. The exact coverage available depends on the circumstances and applicable insurance policies.
A Mississauga hit-and-run lawyer can review the case and determine which potential sources of compensation should be investigated.
Can You Make a Claim If the Hit-and-Run Driver Is Never Found?
Potentially, as this is one of the most important questions after an Ontario hit-and-run accident.
Claims involving unidentified drivers are different from ordinary car accident cases. Insurance coverage may need to be examined to determine whether an unidentified automobile claim or other coverage applies.
Ontario also has a Motor Vehicle Accident Claims Fund, but it is generally considered a payer of last resort and has specific eligibility requirements.
Families should not assume that no driver means no claim.
The available options depend on the facts, insurance coverage and whether the responsible driver is eventually identified.
What Happens If Police Find the Driver?
If investigators identify the pickup truck and its driver, that information could become important to any civil claim.
However, the police investigation and a wrongful death claim are separate processes.
Any criminal or Highway Traffic Act proceedings do not automatically determine civil liability. A personal injury lawyer may conduct a separate investigation into how the collision occurred and which parties may be legally responsible.
That investigation can include witness statements, surveillance footage, vehicle evidence and collision reconstruction information.
Can a Family Sue After a Fatal Pedestrian Accident in Ontario?
If negligence caused a person’s death, certain family members may have the right to pursue compensation under Ontario law.
A fatal pedestrian claim may involve eligible financial losses as well as compensation for the loss of care, guidance and companionship.
The situation becomes more complicated when the responsible driver leaves the scene or remains unidentified.
Families searching “Can I sue after a fatal hit-and-run?”, “Who pays compensation if a hit-and-run driver is never found?”, or “What insurance covers a hit-and-run in Ontario?” should have their specific circumstances reviewed.
Who Is at Fault When a Pedestrian Is Hit in a Crosswalk?
Being in a crosswalk can be an important fact, but liability should still be determined from the complete evidence.
Investigators may examine the pedestrian’s movements, the vehicle’s movements, traffic signals, visibility, the turning manoeuvre and other circumstances.
In this Mississauga collision, police said the pedestrian was in the crosswalk and the pickup truck was turning westbound onto Dundas Street West. Investigators have not yet released a final determination about what caused the collision. CityNews Toronto
Ontario drivers have important responsibilities when approaching pedestrians and making turns. However, each pedestrian accident claim must be assessed using its own evidence.
