Toronto police are searching for a driver after a tragic crash in North York led to the death of a pedestrian who was struck by a falling utility pole.
According to the Toronto Police Services, the vehicle collision occurred just before 6:45 p.m. near Gerry Fitzgerald Drive and Steeles Avenue West, an area that experiences heavy traffic during the evening rush hour. Investigators say the crash began when the driver of an Acura SUV allegedly ran a red light and collided with another vehicle in the intersection.
The collision’s force caused the SUV to strike a nearby utility pole, knocking it down. Tragically, the falling pole struck a 62-year-old pedestrian, who died at the scene.
Police reported that the driver of the Acura fled on foot before officers arrived at the scene of the accident. The individual who fled is described as a thin male wearing a grey or blue tracksuit and carrying a black backpack. Authorities are continuing to search for the suspect and are asking anyone with dashcam or security footage from the area to come forward. There are no images or videos of the suspect.
A nearby convenience store employee told reporters that the vehicles appeared to be speeding before the crash occurred. The collision occurred during a busy time of day, when traffic was heavy, and fog had begun to settle over the area due to melting snow, potentially creating more hazardous driving conditions. Beyond that, the sun setting may have provided a further distraction for the driver.
York Region paramedics reported that three people received medical attention at the scene, including the pedestrian who was pronounced deceased. Two others declined transportation to the hospital.
Advice for Torontonians Injured in Serious Accidents
Accidents like this are tragic reminders that negligent drivers can have devastating consequences not only for Toronto drivers and passengers, but also for innocent pedestrians and bystanders.
If you or a loved one has been seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident in or around Toronto or anywhere in Ontario, it is important to:
-
Seek immediate medical attention – Even if your injuries appear minor seek medical attention as you never fully know the extent of the potential damage unless checked by a professional.
-
Report the accident to Toronto police and obtain a copy of the collision report if possible, as it will come in handy when filing an insurance claim.
-
Document the scene, including pictures, witness statements, drivers licenses and all vehicle details that were involved in the accident – the more documentation the better as it may help you later with your accident claim.
-
Avoid speaking with insurance companies without consulting for legal guidance as early statements can negatively affect your claim.
- Contact a reputable personal injury law firm, as they can navigate your legal options, and allow you to solely focus on rehabilitation.
In cases involving serious injuries or fatalities, victims and families may be entitled to accident benefits and additional compensation through a personal injury claim.
